This map shows LiDAR-derived surface elevation differences across the Fylde corridor, comparing 2018 and 2022 government survey data. Blue indicates relative lowering, red indicates relative raising, and the mid-range indicates minimal change. This is a remotely sensed surface-elevation comparison, not a ground survey measurement, and should be read alongside the corresponding written reports. Red-and-blue outlines around buildings, roads and other sharp-edged features commonly reflect small differences in survey alignment, surface classification or the structures present during each survey, rather than true vertical movement.

Sharp-edged features such as buildings, kerbs, walls and road embankments often produce paired red-and-blue outlines in LiDAR difference maps. A very small horizontal offset between the 2018 and 2022 surveys can place the edge of a building in a slightly different raster cell. One side is then calculated as higher and the other as lower, even where the structure itself has not moved vertically.
Paired red-and-blue edge signatures can also result from actual horizontal displacement of a feature between survey dates. A difference raster alone cannot reliably distinguish real lateral movement from small differences in survey registration, classification or interpolation. Comparison with the original elevation surfaces, repeat imagery and stable reference features is therefore required.

These effects commonly appear as narrow, alternating red-and-blue bands following the precise outline of a structure. They should not automatically be interpreted as relative lowering or raising.
By contrast, potentially meaningful surface change is more likely to appear as a spatially coherent area extending across the ground surface, rather than as a narrow paired outline confined to the edge of a building or road.
